nickel Nickels for Hunger

Cents-Ability is here! Save your “Nickels for Hunger.” Put 5¢ in your bank for each meal that you eat during the month and bring your bank to church on each announced Cents-Ability Sunday. Our next Cents-Ability Sunday will be on January 17 at the 10:00 am service. It’s not too late to join us! If you don’t have a bank and would like one, drop by the church office (you are welcome to add your coins even if you don’t have a bank.) Remember, if you want to see your giving appear on your Valley statement, you will need to give by check, or put your coins in a sealed envelope with your name and offering envelope number. Our coins will go to Presbyterian Hunger programs, including a local agency, Care to Share, which assists in emergency food boxes. For more information, contact Beth Hurd or the Valley Mission Committee.

soles4soulsBarefoot Sunday

Valley, as well as thousands of congregations across the country participated in “Barefoot Sunday” on June 7. Barefoot Sunday is where people leave their shoes on the altar to be donated to the poor. It is a unique opportunity for people to remove their shoes and walk out of worship services barefoot. More than 200 pairs of shoes were left by Valley family and friends. Thank you for your generous contribution!

Soles4Souls has a simple mission - to collect new and “gently worn” shoes to donate to victims of natural disasters and those living in extreme poverty. One of the core groups that help transform its mission from a simple idea into a living example of God’s love is the church.

“Churches have always been incredibly responsive to our programs,” said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “This engaging event will not only leave a mark on the hearts of your entire congregation, but it will also help Soles4Souls continue our mission to ‘Change the World One Pair at a Time,’” Elsey said.

The effort of participating congregations will go directly toward helping put shoes on the feet of barefoot children around the world. The U.S. government estimates that 300 million children around the world don’t own a single pair of shoes. A sad irony is that Americans threw away the same number of shoes into landfills last year alone.

joining hands Bolivia Mission Partnership

As part of the Joining Hands Bolivia (JHB) Mission Partnership, Donna Russell visited Bolivia May 7-17 as part of a group representing Cascades and San Francisco Presbyteries. Both preosbyteries have entered into Presbyterian Church (USA) Joining Hands Partnerships with the group UMAVIDA (“For Life”) in Bolivia. One of the groups participating in UMAVIDA is the Independent Presbyterian Church of Bolivia. The group will be hosted by the Rev. Brad Kent (retired) and his wife Ali, from First Presbyterian, Bend, who are the temporary mission facilitators in La Paz for PC(USA).

UMAVIDA has chosen to focus on a campaign, “Clean water is more precious than gold,” and the Cascades and San Francisco Presbyteries are supporting them in their campaign. More information about the Joining Hands Partnership and about any of the following topics - Bolivia, UMAVIDA, world water crisis, privatization of water, bottles water awareness, sustainability, or current Oregon water issues - is available by contacting Donna Russell. For more information about PC(USA)’s JHB program, visit http://www.pcusa.org/joininghands/bolivia.htm.
