Melissa Parmelee, Director of Valley Christian Preschool
My husband and I moved to Portland, my husband's home town, in May 2004. I am adjusting to the weather change, love the gorgeous scenery, and definitely don't miss the Texas heat! I love hiking, camping, snowboarding, and anything outdoors! I played tennis in college and continue to enjoy playing whenever I get a chance.

I graduated from Tarleton State University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Business and then pursued my passion, working with children, and received my MS in Child and Family Development from Texas State University. While attending college I taught at numerous summer camps, worked as a nanny and then at a group foster home. During graduate school I was a graduate assistant, working with the director at a model Child Development Center for the University which served 120 children ages 6 weeks through pre-k. I am also a certified child life specialist, completing my internship at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Every day the children bring a smile to my face and remind me of how precious life is and what a wonder the world can be through their eyes.

I was born and raised in California and came to Oregon at age 14. My husband, Patrick, and I live in Hillsboro with our three children, Jherika, Brennan, and Cameron. I began my career as a Health Assistant for the Hillsboro School District. I have taken Early Childhood Education classes through Portland Community College and have been in the education field for over 10 years. I have been teaching at VCP since it began in 1996.

I enjoy teaching as it gives me the opportunity to be a positive, godly, influence in the lives of the children. They, in turn, show me the world through the innocent eyes of a child. Children are each born with a unique gift and it is important we recognize these gifts and nurture them so they grow to be the best testimony God intends them to be.

I am inspired by Luke 18:16:  Jesus called the children to him and said "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

I moved back to the Beaverton area in July of 2006 from Denver, Colorado after being gone for more than 15 years. I graduated in 1984 from Beaverton High School and have an associates degree and certificate in Early Childhood Education from Metro State College in Denver. I also have met my director qualifications by Colorado state standards. The love, nurturing, and guidance of young children has been a passion and field of choice of mine for the past twenty years.

I have an elementary aged daughter named Mackenzie who is settling in nicely to her new home state. We both love being here in Oregon and our new schools. The play based curriculum of VCP fits in well with my own philosophy on Early Childhood Education. I believe that children learn through the hands on experience which encourages them to explore and discover the outcomes of their own manipulations. Through their own manipulations children gain cognitive skills, independence, trust and awareness of themselves and others.

“Tell me and I’ll forget;
show me and I may remember,
involve me and I’ll understand.”

I recently moved to Oregon with my husband and we are loving it! Excited to say good bye to Wisconsin winters, eager to ski the mountains and walk the beaches and amazed to be forbidden to pump our own gas. We feel we have really found a great home here in the Portland area.

Before moving out here, I was a 2 ½'s/3's teacher at a preschool in Madison, Wisconsin. I have my degree in Early Childhood Education (preschool through 3rd grade) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I hold fast to the idea that:

"One child may use a ladder,
another build a rocket ship,
another fly,
but each child can reach the stars."

I hope that each child I work with will understand the power of positive choices and know that they have infinite value.

My husband, Mike, and I live with our two boys in the Raleigh Hills neighborhood. Our boys, Stephen and Matt, currently attend Beaverton High School; one is a senior and one is a sophomore. Actually, I grew up in this neighborhood (in the same house we currently live in) and went to Raleigh Park, Whitford and Beaverton High School. After high school, I went to Oregon State University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Even though I graduated in business, my first love was working with children. When our children were born, I quit work and became active in our children's school doing everything from classroom help and fundraising to helping in the cafeteria. Even with our kids in high school, I still work in their school and actively participate in their sports activities. Outside of school, I was involved in coaching soccer and helping with the youth football program for the Beaverton area.

In 2005, opportunity knocked and I was able to work for Valley Christian Preschool. I absolutely love working with preschool children. They are like a sponge and love to learn. I feel if we watch children long enough we might learn a few things ourselves.

I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. My husband, Mike, and I have two daughters Amy and Megan.

I previously worked for the Beaverton School District as a classified substitute, and have been an active volunteer at both of my daughters' schools. The thing that I enjoy the most about working with children is that no two days are ever alike. It is so amazing to look at the world through each child's eyes and watch their creative imaginations at work as each day brings new adventures and discoveries.

I am originally from Southern California, and my husband and I moved to Oregon in 1993. We love it here! Our duaghter, Ellen, is a VCP graduate and now attends St. Mary's of the Valley.  I have been a member here at Valley since 1999, and am active in the Moms' Bible Study.  I enjoy a good book, family nature walks, and trips to the beach. I also volunteer at my daughter's school as often as I can.

I have a BA in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine, with a specialization in psychology and social behavior.  I enjoy being with children and listening to the stories they tell. To be part of the children's lives here is a joy for me.

I’m thrilled my days at VCP continue! I am a member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church, and keep active with Children’s Ministries. I teach 3s/4s Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, participate with Wednesday Fellowship Night and Moms’ Bible Study, and have served on the preschool board.

I am a Portland native, and my husband and I returned here when we were starting our family. We have two elementary-aged daughters, one of whom finished at VCP a few years ago. At that time, I volunteered with a Vision Committee, and grew to appreciate the uniqueness of VCP and its mission. VCP holds a special place in my heart.

In my life before kids I worked for 10 years in the environmental services field. I have found something special in working with young children and families, however, and hope to continue my learning and growth in this area. I believe each of us is a Child of God, and appreciate having the opportunity to work and play with your children.

I'm fortunate to share my life with many wonderful people, including my husband, daughter, and son. A few years ago we moved from Colorado, my home state, to Oregon to be closer to my husband's family. We have enjoyed living in Portland and getting to spend more time outdoors, but I do miss the Colorado snow. However, living within driving distance to the beach has made up for the lack of snow.

I graduated from the Universtiy of Colorado with a double degree in Biology and Elementary Education. I taught kindergarten, first, and second grade for seven years and then fifth grade for two more years. I also recieved my National Board Certification for Early Childhood Education and hold a Master's Teaching License. In my spare time, I write for children's magazines, parent's magazines, and educational journals.

After taking three years to be a stay at home mom, I'm back teaching preschool, where I originally started out while in college. I'm thrilled to be back in the classroom where I can spend each day with smiling faces. Working with children who love to explore, learn, and grow is truly inspiring.

My husband Steve and I live in the neighborhood with our 4 year old daughter Katie who goes to Valley. I have been working with children most of my life and cannot imagine doing anything else. After graduating high school I moved to Wyoming to attend college for 2 years. While there I took early childhood education classes and worked part-time at the preschool/daycare on campus. After moving back to Oregon I attended Western Oregon University and got my degree in Elementary education. After being a substitute teacher for 2 years I took a job as a nanny for 3 years and really felt like I got my degree in motherhood at that point! I then started as the associate director of the after school program at St. Thomas More here in Portland and stayed there for 5 years until we had Katie. I loved my family at St. Thomas More but really wanted to be a stay at home mom. Now I get to be with my daughter and work with children again so it is a blessing for us both. How lucky to be in a job where people are happy to see you, coloring and smooshing play-doh are required, plus you get hugs!!
